Overview
MetaOptima Technology is a global digital health company based in Vancouver, Canada that strives to empower patients and their care providers with intelligent solutions for better patient outcomes. The company is committed to revolutionizing the dermatology and skin care industry with advanced, effective, and intelligent tools. MetaOptima’s vision is to bring digital healthcare and mobile technologies together by providing medical professionals and patients with easier access to medical information, more control over their health needs, and mostly their peace of mind.
MetaOptima offers two proprietary products: MoleScope™, a mobile dermoscope that attaches to popular smart devices to capture medical-grade quality images for skin imaging; and DermEngine™, an intelligent analytical dermatology data platform for the imaging, documentation, and analysis of skin conditions. DermEngine works seamlessly with MoleScope and other dermoscopes to help specialists better diagnose skin problems, evaluate treatment options, and monitor their efficacy.
At MetaOptima, I worked on an extensive and challenging number of projects for MetaOptima along with its main products: MoleScope and DermEngine. As the only designer, I had the chance to work with other teams and departments on various projects that helped shape the company. My work for MetaOptima was mainly focused on branding, visual, and graphic design projects. However, I was also in charge of multiple projects, including but not limited to:
Working as the only designer for MetaOptima challenged me to work on a large number of projects with every team and department, including the C-suite. A range of the projects I worked on for MetaOptima were graphic design tasks for marketing and sales material such as proposal and presentation slides to icons and ui/ux designs for the website. Every project had its challenges and slightly different processes, which fluctuated from time to time; however, I tried to keep a couple of general workflows consistent depending on the type of project and approach needed.
For most graphic and print design related projects, the process I followed can be found in MoleScope project process section. For most ui/ux and platform related projects, the process I followed can be found in the DermEngine project process section.
As a result of designing and creating the company’s image and tone, most of the projects needed to be reviewed and approved by the C-suite, specifically the CEO, which generated many feedback and iterations rounds. She provided most of the feedback during product review meetings as it was easier to communicate her thoughts and for me to back up my design decisions and to explain the reasoning of why certain things were done in a specific way. Once designs are accepted, I create final versions and share them back with the CEO and the colleagues who would need those files for their tasks to be completed.
Some of the amazing projects I had the pleasure of designing and creating for the company during my time at MetaOptima include websites, conference material, stationery, illustrations, and more. If you would like to know more in detail about these projects, don’t hesitate to reach out and we can chat about it over a cup of coffee.

I was in charge of designing the homepage, a few web pages, as well as some landing pages for the company. For these projects, I worked closely with the front end developers to develop these sites and improve the user journeys. Aside from that, I created and managed the branding, visual design, and all the necessary images and icons.
Creating material for the company and office was something I did frequently that was somewhat different from the typical marketing material. I produced and redesigned projects like company stationery, logos for other products, and signs for the office. Some of these designs were more fun to create as they permitted me to create with a slightly different style compared to the usual material with the company’s branding and tone.
Most of the material I created for marketing and sales purposes were mainly to be used at events and trade shows the company attends throughout the year. Due to the increasing number of conferences, I designed an easy to assemble booth, a few banners, and other elements that include freebies, presentation slides, and flyers. The materials and booth components I created were for all three of our offices to use for the corresponding events they attended with small changes to accommodate their respective audiences. Additionally, I was tasked to create illustrations, infographics, and various workflow pages and mockups.
For the past 5 years, I had the amazing opportunity to design, create, and share an incredible amount of projects that everyone admires, including our team members, medical professionals, patients, and government health organizations. I relished my role as I got to create phenomenal products while working with bright colleagues to better the workflow of many experts in the healthcare industry for them to help save lives around the world. Being able to see all my creations being used and admired by various people for several reasons is a motivation that drives me to continue to create projects like these and to work with companies that help others.
When I joined, there were ten of us crammed into two small offices, one for the business team and one for the development team. That allowed me to work with each department to properly understand the products; however, this only worked for the first two to three years before each team started to grow significantly. As the marketing and business team grew, it allowed us to expand our abilities to properly connect with our customers and obtain direct feedback from them regarding our products.
If the company had more time and budget, I would like to put together a design team to support and create a variety of projects for the company and all the patients out there. If I had more time for certain projects, I would spend more time researching and testing to make sure what I produce are what users need and not what they think they need. Furthermore, I would have liked to spend extra time creating more appealing and out of the box designs that could be used to test customer feedback but most of the time, I had short timelines to complete these projects by myself.
All in all, all the projects I designed and created for the company and its products ranged from branding to graphics, visuals, and ui/ux design. These also included iconography, testing, Spanish translations, and live demos at conferences. Because I was the only designer, I was able to improve and learn new skills by either learning them myself or collaborating with colleagues from different departments.
